Last weekend, Vashon’s wrestlers traveled north to compete in the annual Everett Classic — a highly competitive tournament that saw 30 teams participating this year.
Varsity athletes Lewis Kanagy, Jordon Rutschow and Ethan McIntyre placed second, third and fifth respectively, with teammates Jake Carman, Isaac Escovedo and Ryan Nelson winning one match each.
The junior varsity crew celebrated its champions George “Cheese Whiz” Murphy (who pinned all his opponents), Alec Macomber-Straight and Jacob “Rockstar” Bowden. Second-place finishes came from Max Patterson and Nikhila Bernsten, and Yury Coucoules and Liam “Lil Shorty” Laak rounded out the JV superstars with thirds.
Coach Anders Blomgren said that of the Pirates’ 16 entrants, 14 were freshman and sophomores — putting an exclamation point on the young team’s top performance.
“There was a ton of great and new competition for the team,” he added. “All of the schools were larger ones from northwest Washington.”
