At the Nisqually League Championship meet held at Spanaway Lake Park on Oct. 22, the Vashon Pirates boys’ cross-country team placed third overall out of eight Nisqually League schools from both 1A and 2A classifications.
Adding up Vashon’s five place winners for the team gave them 89 points for the meet.
“Our guys felt really good about their success, and they showed a lot of confidence in how they approached this race,” said Coach Kevin Ross.
The Pirates had some individual place winners as well. Sophomore Tylor Heit finished fifth overall out of 55 runners and received a medal for his effort. Junior Aidan Cyra came in 14th overall and received a ribbon.
The girls’ team, however, was plagued by illness and could not field a whole team to the event. Savannah Krug, however, ran wonderfully, coming in fourth place.
“I think this next Saturday will be great for the girls, as long as they can all get healthy before then,” said Coach Laura Johnson.
On Halloween, the boys and girls will compete in the West Central Tri-District Championships at American Lake in Tacoma. This meet will be comprised of 16 teams representing three districts and five leagues. The top six teams and top 30 individuals will move onto the State Championships, to be held at the Sun Willows golf course in Pasco.
