Vashon Island Wrestling (VIW) varsity and junior varsity teams competed last weekend at the Auburn Trojan Invitational. Seven other schools, most larger than Vashon, competed in the tournament.
VIW brought 21 wrestlers to the matches, nine of whom were freshman — It was the first high school competition for all nine and the first ever for several.
On the varsity team, Luke Larson won first place, pinning all of his opponents in the first round. Moses Kilpatrick garnered second place, having pinned his first two opponents before running into a buzz saw in the finals. Jake Carman grabbed third place, coming from behind in his last match. Nico Nuxoll took fourth place with two pins and two loses.
The junior varsity team saw three third place finishes from Ryan “TD” Nelson, Alyx Arteaga and Rey Rivas; and two fourth place from Finn McClure and Jordan Rutschow.
“We were happy with the way we competed,” Coach Anders Blomgren said. “This early in the year, we’re really just learning how our team competes and what we need to work on — individually and as a group.”
The team will be away on Thursday to compete against Port Townsend and will be at home on Friday against Lake Stevens. Junior varsity matches will begin at 5:30 p.m. and varsity will begin at 6:15 p.m.
