Former world doubles champion Vania King, who has won major titles including Wimbledon and the U.S Open, will play an exhibition match on Vashon to promote tennis at the Vashon Tennis Club.
King’s match will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Vashon Golf and Swim Club on Maury Island.
The tennis star reached a career-high ranking of #3 in the world in doubles and #50 in the world in singles. She is a two-time Grand Slam Doubles Champion, winning Wimbledon and the US Open in 2010, becoming the last Asian American female to win a Grand Slam. She has won 15 World Tennis Association (WTA) doubles titles and one WTA singles title.
Today, King focuses much of her time promoting access to tennis for underprivileged children through servinguphope.org, a group she founded and directs.
King’s exhibition match is open to the public, with a requested donation of $50 to support improvements to the tennis bubble and tennis courts used by the Vashon High School teams and islanders of all ages. Attendees 18 and younger may attend free of charge.
To support these efforts and see King shine on the court, RSVP at tinyurl.com/5n27c3dk.
Attendees will be able to meet King and enjoy appetizers and a beverage at the club after the match.
The Vashon Tennis Club hosts tennis and pickleball throughout the year, with a weatherproof dome installed in the fall of 2019. The “bubble” is inflated in early November for six months, providing a needed recreational facility in the dark days of the winter.
While tennis was the original focus of fundraising that made the dome possible, interest in pickleball has increased dramatically in the last few years, leading to a vibrant community that is now part of the club’s mission.
