VHS sophomore finishes strong at cross-country state race

Madeline Yarkin finished in 12th place overall at the 5k State Championship.

Vashon High School Pirate harrier, sophomore Madeline Yarkin, running in the 5k State Championship, finished in 12th place overall with a time of 19:58 in the tightly packed race held on a golf course in Pasco.

Coach Laura Johnson said that in the race, many of the 124 runners were running a more tactical race on the cool and clear morning, slowing most times. Yarkin held to the front pack, strong and determined.

“Her commitment, strength and tenacity bode well for her future, and we anticipate a strong girls team next season when Madeline is joined by the middle school runners who ran so well this year,” she said.
