On Thursday, March 19, the same day the Seattle Sounders FC made Major League Soccer history, the Vashon Pirate boys were making a little soccer history themselves.
The Pirates traveled to Chimacum for a 1A Nisqually League opener and came home with a solid 6-2 win.
Junior Tyler Sayvetz opened the scoring with a goal for Vashon, and senior Thomas Timm-Skove added another before the half. The Cowboys’ Griffin Holmes made it 2-1 by halftime.
Swedish exchange student Jens Lundblad put the Pirates up 3-1 with a quick goal to open the second half and added a second score before Timm-Skove got his own second goal.
Junior Will O’Neil finished up the scoring for Vashon. O’Neil and Timm-Skove were each credited with two assists.
The Cowboys’ Keegan Young added another goal in the second, but it was not enough to overcome the Pirate assault.
The Pirate win was sandwiched between two 4-1 non-league losses to 2A teams.
After being snowed out of a scheduled game at 2A North Mason last Monday, Vashon hosted Fife for JV and varsity games on Tuesday. The Trojans strong JV overwhelmed the young Pirate JV, and Fife’s varsity shut out the Pirates in the second half.
Fife’s varsity got two goals in the first half and two more in the second half. Timm-Skove converted a feed from Lundblad for the Pirate score.
On Friday, a non-school day for Vashon students, a combined varsity-JV squad traveled to Sequim.
With an almost gale-force wind blowing across the field at a 45-degree angle, the host Wolves took a 2-0 lead. Lundblad, going against a lone defender and the Sequim keeper, left both on the ground as he found the back of the net to make it 2-1 at the break.
The Wolves got two quick goals to open the second half before Vashon’s defense could regroup. Freshman keeper Logan Lewis, up from JV to play his first game in the net, shut out the host team for the final 38 minutes.
Evan Watkins and Eric Watkins each scored twice for Sequim.
The Pirates hosted Eatonville (non-league) on Monday and Charles Wright on Tuesday.
On Monday, the Pirates beat Eatonville, a non-league team, 4-2.
In the eighth minute, Yungblad scored on an assist from Timm-Skove. In the 16th minute, Timm-Skove scored on an assist from Lundblad. In the 17th minute, Lundblad scored on a free kick.
In the 25th and 33rd minutes, Eatonville’s Jason Helbig scored.
In the second half, in the 71st minute, Lundblad scored on a penalty kick.
Results for Tuesday’s game came too late for publication in today’s Beachcomber.
Tomorrow, Thursday, the team travels to Life Christian, and Tuesday, March 31, Cascade Christian comes to the Island.
