On Thursday Sept. 23, it was hard to tell if Vashon High School’s Pirate cross country team was at a home or away meet. It was just across the water at Pt. Defiance Park.

The Life Christian Academy Eagles were the host, however. The Charles Wright Tarriers were also at the meet. A good contingent of parents walked across the ferry with the team and may have out numbered the other schools’ support.

The race’s start and finish lines faced the ferry line, so our commuters caught the action from their vehicles, and the runners had some great views of Vashon Island itself during the competition.

In the middle school race, eighth-grader Graham Peet took second overall with a time of 10:02 for the 1.65-mile course.

In the 3.1-mile high school races, the girls had an incomplete team and could not score in the meet. However, senior Savannah Krug placed second o,verall as an individual, with a time of 21:38 which was a slight improvement over last week’s meet.

The boys race had 20 athletes at the starting line, 10 of which represented the Pirates. They were victorious in the boy’s meet with 17 points. Charles Wright had 41 points and Life Christian was incomplete.

Tylor Heit and Aidan Cyra finished first and second for the boys, and Codi Williams, Max Johnson and Ryan Krug all improved their times from the last meet held at Fort Steilacoom.

The annual ferry dock to ferry dock event, where VHS athletes and runners from the community will run the 13.5-mile distance or portions of it from the Tahlequah ferry to the north end ferry, will take place on Oct. 2.
