Mia Croonquist, an award-winning rower from Vashon, stroked her way to a second world championship medal last weekend.

Croonquist, 16, competed in the junior women’s eight boat for the U.S. team at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Bulgaria on Aug. 19. With her team, she won silver at the highest level of competition for a junior rower.

Last year Croonquist won gold at Worlds, competing for the U.S. in the junior women’s four. Earlier this summer she qualified for the U.S. team once again, despite not rowing all last school year while she attended high school in Hawaii.

This year Croonquist stroked her boat, meaning she set the crew’s pace, as it sailed into second place just two seconds behind a strong crew from Romania.

In the preliminary race at Worlds, Croonquist’s boat came in third behind Romania and Germany, enough to make it into the final heat.

Croonquist, at the time, said her team hadn’t shown all its stuff in the first race. She was proven right when the U.S. boat then placed second in the finals, ahead of Germany and Italy.

The boat also helped make history for the U.S. It was the first year that all three of the junior women’s sweeping boats medaled at the world competition. The junior women’s pair and four also won silver.
