The Vashon High School Boys’ Lacrosse Club sustained an opening-season loss to the Tacoma Lacrosse Club last Thursday.

Vashon began the game in Tacoma with a hopeful flurry of shots at the opposing team’s goal, but was not able to connect. Tacoma responded with four goals in the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead.

Vashon kept it close through the second and third quarters thanks to scoring from juniors Konnar Fall, Luke Hembree and Dan Lofland. However, missed scoring opportunities and too many breakdowns on Vashon’s defensive end thwarted their efforts to stay close. Tacoma pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 16-6 win.

The game had many positive elements for Vashon. Sophomore goalie Aaron Bomber made 15 heroic saves. Freshmen Nick Amundsen and Griff Jennings made notable contributions, as did junior Dan Lofland, who played in his first high school lacrosse game. Lofland tallied two goals and just missed scoring several more times. Junior Luke Hembree led the scoring with three goals.

Vashon’s schedule will not get any easier in its upcoming games. The team traveled to Eastside Catholic on Saturday, March 19, and will host powerhouse Curtis High School for its first home game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22.
