Last week was a difficult one for the Vashon Lacrosse Club.

Most notably, for the second time this season, a lacrosse mom died. 

On Tuesday, Brenda Pomeyer — mother of Luke and Carson Hembree — died after surgery related to a brain aneurism. 

“Clearly our players were shaken,” said coach Charley Rosenberry in an e-mail.

Luke and Carson both played in Wednesday’s game against Bainbridge, a team with far more experience than Vashon.

Bainbridge, which is known for its high scores, beat Vashon, 28-3, in the most lopsided loss in the history of the program (since 1992).

In the game, two veteran players sustained injuries that kept them out of Thursday’s game against Eastlake, a school three times larger than Vashon. Rosenberry said that by that time, the the players were both physically and emotionally exhausted. They lost to Eastlake, 18-2.

“Regardless of these scores, I cannot be more proud of the way the team has supported Luke and Carson and the way these two young men have devotedly kept with the team in both games and practices this week,” Rosenberry said. “That is more noteworthy than two lopsided losses.”

Lynnwood forfeited Saturday’s game against Vashon due to disorganization and league sanctions.

“It goes in the column as a bittersweet win for Vashon,” Rosenberry said.

The team will travel to Lake Tapps today and to Yakima on Saturday. Their next home games wil be on Tuesday, April 26, against Lake Washington, and Wednesday, April 27, against Puyallup.
