The Pirate track and field team competed at Charles Wright on April 22. The boy’s team placed third with 47 points, while the girls took second with 71 points.
“This year’s squad came into the meet with a nice mixture of athletes who are new to this sport along with our stellar veterans,” said Coach Kevin Ross.
Highlights for the boys’ team include Cole Grabow, who set a personal best in both the 800 and 1600 meters; Tyler Stoffer, who placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.74 seconds; Aidan Cyra, winning the 800 by beating out three opponents on the final lap; and James Spencer blowing by his Charles Wright opponent in the home stretch and securing a victory for the guys’ 4×400-meter relay team, which clocked a time of 3:50.57.
On the girls’ side, Savannah Krug won the 1600 meters, while Kate Straube ran to a second-place finish in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdle events. Samantha Clements won the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 8 inches, and she set a personal best in the 100-meter dash, as did Michelle Gilmour-Myer and Kiely Bernheisel.
“All three girls are in their first year of Pirate track and are showing a lot of potential,” Ross said.
