The Vashon Pirates played the Life Christian/Seattle Christian War Eagles on Saturday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood, losing to the combined team, which was twice as large as the Pirates, 35-8.

The War Eagles came out with a bang, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown.

Vashon’s opening drive ended in a punt, and the War Eagle’s scored again on their next drive, bringing the score to 14-0.

Vashon again had to punt, but a few plays later forced a fumble at the 40-yard line that was recovered by Pirate Robert Easton. Vashon moved the ball to the 20-yard line, but they were unable to convert on the fourth down.

The War Eagles scored two more times in the second quarter, leaving the score 28-0 at halftime. The War Eagles scored again in the third quarter, taking their lead to 35-0.

With limited depth at skill positions and several injured players, Vashon’s young team was unable to move the ball effectively until the fourth quarter when Peter Evans, a defensive safety, recovered a fumble and ran it back for a touchdown. Running back Nick Betz then powered his way into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

The game ended with Vashon behind, 35-8.

The Pirates’ next game is this Friday at Charles Wright.
