Julian Smith and Zack Drape each collected three hits to help lead the Pirate baseball team to a 7-4 victory in seven innings over Seattle Christian on Friday, April 15, on the Vashon field.
Joining them in the hitting parade with two hits apiece were Peter Johnson, Tyler Bernheisel and Ezra Lacina. Matt Dick, Michael Bernheisel and Geoffrey Kraabel all contributed a hit as well. Vashon pounded out a total of 15 hits for the day.
The Pirates’ starting pitcher Tyler Bernheisel showed good command, throwing strikes on 54 of his 80 pitches. He went the distance for the win, collecting four strike outs, walking three and scattering seven hits.
Vashon took the lead in the first, scoring two runs on a groundout by Bernheisel and an RBI single by Dick.
Seattle Christian scored four runs in the top of the third to go ahead 4-2. A fielder’s choice sparked Seattle Christian’s rally.
The Pirates immediately responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and the score was tied at 4-4 after three innings.
Johnson kicked things off with a double, bringing Drape home. That was followed by a sacrifice fly by Dick, plating Smith.
Vashon regained the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and finished their scoring with a single run in the sixth.
Line score: Vashon 7 runs, 15 hits, 2 errors, Seattle Christian 4 runs, 7 hits, 3 errors.
Vashon had games last Monday and Wednesday, against Port Townsend and Cascade Christian, postponed because of rain.
Their Friday victory evened their season record to 3-3 and improved their league record to 2-1.
Vashon had games scheduled Monday and Tuesday against Orting and Cascade Christian, respectively.
Tomorrow they will take on Charles Wright in an away game at 4 p.m.
