Alex Wegner and Charlie Hoffman, both members of Vashon High School’s 2009 state championship basketball team, recently made moves to continue their successful athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Wegner, a 2011 VHS graduate, accepted an invitation to continue his career and walk on, or play without an athletic scholarship, at the University of Washington  under coach Lorenzo Romar.

As a high school senior, Wegner enjoyed one of the greatest individual years in the history of VHS basketball, averaging 22.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, setting VHS records for points in a season and points in a game and earning first team 1A All-State honors, among other awards.

“Alex had a terrific career at VHS and will bring a tremendous amount of skill, work ethic and competitiveness to UW,” said Vashon basketball coach Andy Sears.

Former VHS standout Hoffman signed a letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in Nampa, Idaho.

Hoffman, a 2009 graduate of VHS, has spent the past two seasons at Wenatchee Valley Community College, averaging 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

“Charlie is a fantastic defender and brings a physical presence to the floor,” Sears said. “I’m very proud to see him moving on to play at such a high level.”

NNU is an NCAA Division 2 school and a member of the Greater Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).

Hoffman and Wegner join 2010 VHS graduate John Gage, who currently plays for Stanford University, as members of the 2009 VHS state championship team to continue their basketball careers in college.
