The Vashon High School golf team sent three players to the sub-district tournament held at the Fort Lewis golf course on Monday, May 17.

Matt Kerns finished his day with a score of 94, Scott Smith with an 86 and Cole Devereau with an 87. All three made the cut for Tri-Districts, held the next day, Tuesday, May 18, at the same course.

Senior Matt Kerns, hampered by a basketball injury for two weeks prior, finished his second day with a 108, not enough to make the state tournament.

Senior Scott Smith, with his strong showing on Monday, shot an 85 at Tri-Districts and was easily pegged for the state tournament at spot number 17.

The top 34 out of 69 in Tri-Districts made it to state.

Freshman Cole Devereau, who stepped up his play because of the injury to Kerns and shot an 87 on Monday, shot a 90 at Tri-Districts and had to wait a couple of hours for the other scores to come in. On the bubble of making the cut for state, final scores came in, and six boys, all with a score of 90, had a one-hole playoff.

Devereau shot one over par on the par-5 first hole, good enough to secure the 31st position for the state tournament.

Coach Andy Sears was nearly ecstatic because he was going to the state tournament with two golfers.

He was very excited when he found Smith had made it and even happier when Devereau made it after the one-hole playoff, he said.

Sears said he had a great golf team this year; everyone played well. It was a large team with 12 boys and eight girls.

Sears, Smith and Devereau headed over to Richland on Monday for a practice round. Tuesday, Smith teed off at 10:12 a.m. and Devereau at 11:06 a.m. at Columbia Point Golf Course.

Depending on how the day went, the athletes may play on Wednesday for placement. Results from Tuesday’s competition came too late for publication in this week’s Beachcomber.
