The Vashon High School track and field team set sail on its inaugural meet of the season last Thursday at Charles Wright Academy.
For many athletes, this was their first athletic competition for the high school, and for the few returning veterans, the five-team meet was an opportunity to pick up where they left off last year.
Freshman Gerry Gerrior placed third in the boys’ 100-meter race at 12.2 seconds and second in the 200 meters in 25.17. In the boys’ javelin, senior Nate Lawson finished in second place with a throw of 122 feet, 10 inches.
In the girls’ 1,600-meter race, sophomore Eva Anderson placed second with a time of 6.00.34; Anderson also finished third in the 800 meters in 2:46.52.
In the girls’ 3,200-meter race, all Aria Mildon and Natalie VanDevanter needed to do was finish the race, as they were the only two competitors entered to compete. Mildon finished the eight-lap race in 14:08.59, and VanDevanter finished in 15:22.81. Annika Hille, Katherine Andrus, Annie Muller and Lauren Jenks swept the top four places in the girls’ long jump. Hille set the standard with a jump of 16 feet. Hille also finished second in the girls’ 200-meter race in 27.43 The Pirate girls 4-by-100-meter relay team consisting of Annika Hille, Emily Browne, Annie Muller and Lauren Jenks took first with a time of 54.57.
The girls team placed third at overall at the meet. Scoring for the girls was Bellevue Christian 111, Charles Wright 89, Vashon 84, Cascade Christian 77 and Seattle Christian 21.
Overall meet scoring for the boys was Charles Wright 115.5, Bellevue Christian 112, Cascade Christian 98.5, Seattle Christian 31 and Vashon 23.
Tomorrow the Pirates will head to the West Seattle Stadium for a meet with these same Nisqually League teams as well as Emerald City League teams.
