Islanders in Seattle run
Close to 14,000 men, women and children participated in the full marathon, half marathon and kids arathon, the three sections of the Sunday, Nov. 25, Seattle Marathon, sponsored by the University of Washington Medical Center.
In that very large group, at least 14 Islanders (according to Vashon High School track coach) participated.
Bruce Cyra was first in his age group, running the half (13.1 miles) in 1:20.43.
Vashon High School cross-country coach Kevin Ross came in at 1:29.57, followed by Jeff Cunningham at 1:30.17, Cedril Gagnaire at 1:38.26 and Ramsey Walker at 1:38.39.
Bruce Cyra’s son Keller finished in 1:40.07 before Hanh Shaw at 1:42.33, Maximo Mandl at 1:43.06, and Travis Shaw at 1:47.22.
The three final Vashon finishers were Connie Cunningham at 1:57.57 and, in a tie, Kyla Trujillo and Betsy Johnson at 2:52.08.
In the full 26.2-mile marathon, VHS track coach Laura Johnson concluded her run in 4:24.57, followed by Debbie Jackson just behind at 4:27.36.
McMurray girls soccer matches
The McMurray varsity and junior varsity girls soccer teams played Charles Wright Terriers on Nov. 28 and took on the Hawkins Huskies on Nov. 29.
The varsity started the season with a shutout, blanking the Terriers 6-0. Christina Gleb and Courtney Gateman both played well in the goal to record the shutout.
The team also made a strong showing against the Huskies, besting them with a 7-1 score.
The J.V. girls also started their season on a strong note going 2-0 for the week.
Against Charles Wright, the team came out on top with a 4-0 win. Taylor Knowles, playing in goal the whole game, recorded the shutout. Scoring the goals against the Terriers were Samantha Vaughan with two, and Katelyn Carter and Sammy Clements each had one.
In their game against Hawkins, which was playing one player down, the team got its second win by 4-1.
Scoring the goals against the Huskies were Shalise Bosworth with two, and Emily Kehoe and Clements each had one.
