Last week was a bad one for Pacific Northwest sports.
The Huskies were decimated in Arizona, the Cougs couldn’t score to save their lives, the Seahawks defense missed the plane to New York and the Vashon Pirates volleyball team lost 3-0 against a senior-dominated Seattle Christian team.
The Pirates team is a “live and die by the sword” team. They have a limited bench, and if even one of the seven players is having an off-day, it can be hard going.
Game one, a 25-15 loss, was punctuated with errors, 15 to be exact, and the Pirates never got their game together.
In game two, the Pirates were ahead until the 12th point, and then the missed hits and errors took a toll in the 25-19 loss.
Game three, a 25-18 defeat, had a few good moments as the team rallied, but then it lost its momentum.
As coach Mike Holmgren said about the Seahawks’ shellacking by the New York Giants, Vashon as a team is “going to have to find out what happened.”
But even on the battered Pirate team, one person stood out with a steady hand and good serving.
Devin Anderson set well and served well with a team-high four aces and one kill. Anderson did not miss a single serve.
Volleyball dad Mitch Treese said after the contest, “There is greatness in this team. We have all seen it and felt it in how they play. It is a team where everyone must have a good day every match to play at its highest level. They will find the team strength to keep everyone focused and bring each player back from the abyss of an off-day.”
“Coach Plypick will continue to prepare the team for each match,” he said. “The co-captains will continue to lead and help the team steady the nerves of all. We shall see many more wins yet this season.”
