The Vashon Seals Swim Team won its first swim meet in recent memory two weeks ago at the Second Honu Gathering at Mount Tahoma High School.

Six teams participated. The Seals took top honors with a total of 1,669 points, 270 points ahead of second-place finisher Olympic Aquatic Club.

Top point earners were David Nguyen at 68, with a second-place tie between Maia Cunningham and Max Gross-Shader, each with 64 points. Jeremiah Bogaard put in a strong and surprising performance and earned 63 points.

The girls 10-and-under relay team, Kiana Chinn, Emily Milbrath, Kyra MacLeod and Maia Cunningham, tied Olympic Aquatic Club for first.

Nguyen and Gross-Shader, joined by Jacob Gold and Diego Gray-Wishik, walked away with first in the Boys 10-and-under 100-yard medley relay. The Seals “B” team held off Olympic to take second place.

Other notable swims came from Kendal Danzer, who dropped a cumulative 19.92 seconds in her four events: June Haselton, who dropped 13.98 seconds, Oscar Lewis with a 20.84-second time drop, and Lucas MacLeod with 38.55 seconds shaved off his times.

Zoe Sackman took second in the 100-yard butterfly event, a little more than a second behind first place.

In the past few weeks, 16 Seals have earned the right to compete in the Age Group Invitational Meet at Mount Tahoma High School Nov. 21 to 22. Eighteen teams from the region will compete in this meet.

“Previously the team had only had one or two swimmers qualify,” said Seals Head Coach Lisa MacLeod. “This year, we have had an amazing number qualify.”

Club president Travis Shaw sent a message to parents and swimmers: “Winning this meet as a team is a measure of your discipline, commitment, and spirit.”

Twenty-two Seals swam at another qualifying meet Nov. 15, at King County Aquatic Center.
