Pirates volleyball handles Wright In their first match of the season, the Vashon Pirates volleyball team handily overtook the Charles Wright Tarriers on their court during an exciting four games. The Pirates started slowly, losing the first game 25 to 11. The first eight points went to the Tarriers as it appeared the Pirates struggled to find their footing, offense and team direction. But then game two arrived, and the Pirates’ offense and defense both showed up. Margaret Gritten had a six-point serving streak during this game, and both outside hitter India Everett and middle blocker and hitter Katie Tomlinson connected with numerous kill shots. The Tarriers had too many passing and serving errors in the second game to gain any momentum. The Pirates took advantage and grabbed the game 25 to 17 and didn’t look back. Devin Anderson had some amazing sets for the hitters during game three as Jessica Pirruccio worked the back court with her solid passing skills. Right-handed Pirruccio also managed to land the Pirates’ 18th point during this game with a surprising left-handed shot over the net that the Tarriers weren’t able to return. Even though this game was back and forth, the Pirates once again prevailed 25 to 22. When the score was 15-15 during game four, Marika Treese had five straight ace serves that solidified the Pirates lead to 20-15. The Tarriers tried to reclaim their earlier lead, but the Pirates wouldn’t back down and again won the game, 25-23, and so the match. New to the team this year is ninth grader Leah Andrews, who started her first high school volleyball game on the varsity court. Two other additions were made to the team this year are freshmen Tazi Floury and Riley Kimmel.
