Spring was in full swing last week, and the Pirate boys soccer fortunes were as changeable as the Northwest weather.

On Tuesday, with sunshine and almost ideal soccer weather, the Pirates lost 5 to 1 to Charles Wright on the Tarriers perfectly groomed grass pitch.

On Thursday, the Pirates stayed home to host the Life Christian Eagles in a driving rain storm and came away 2-to-0 winners in a mud fest.

Charles Wright was up four to nothing in the second half before Nick Gass broke free from a crowd of Tarriers for Vashon’s lone goal in Tuesday’s game.

Thursday’s game was another story. Will O’Neil put the Pirates ahead in the 13th minute with a well-placed free kick from just outside the 18-yard penalty box.

Tylor Heit sealed the win in the 73rd minute when he took a perfect cross from Gass and beat the Eagle goalkeeper one-on-one.

Pirate keeper Robert McGinnis and the Vashon defense didn’t seem worried by the wet, slippery ball and muddy footing as McGinnis registered his second shutout of the season.

The game saw an Eagle player ejected in the second half. The player was yellow-carded in the first half for pushing a Pirate defender from behind after he was beaten to the ball. The same player received a second yellow when he jumped up after being fouled and again pushed a Vashon defender while the ball was out of play, and the Eagles had to finish the game with only 10 players on the field.

At Charles Wright, the Vashon JV got goals by Alessandro Rossi, assisted by Ezra Koenig, and Walker Merchant, assisted by Josh Bacchus, but the Tarrier JV scored three times to win 3 to 2.

Life Christian does not have a JV team.

The Pirate varsity and JV were scheduled to play at Seattle Prep Tuesday, and the JV has a game at Cascade Christian at 4 p.m. today, Wednesday; then the Pirates take a week off from games during spring break.
