Pirate junior Will O’Neil scored Vashon’s first goal since April 21, but it wasn’t enough to get the Pirate soccer team to the state tournament.

By the time O’Neil found the back of the net in the 62nd minute on Saturday, Lynden Christian had two goals, and the Lynx went on to win 3-1 and advance to state.

The temperature on the synthetic turf at Mount Vernon High School was above 70 by the 1 p.m. kickoff.

Vashon goalkeeper Robert McGinnis and defenders O’Neil, David Salonen, Jackson McFall and Nick Gass kept the Lynx at bay until the 34th minute and the halftime score was 1-0 Lynx.

Coach Paul Beytebiere made some adjustments for the second half, sending O’Neil up to team up with Elias Weston and Jens Lundblad for a stronger attack.

The Lynx scored again in the 51st minute, then the Pirates mounted a serious attack that paid off when Weston fed the ball through to O’Neil who took it forward and looped it over the keeper’s head and gently into the back of the net.

The score remained 2-1 until the final 20 seconds when Lynden Christian got one last goal.

The loss ended the Pirates’ season while the Lynx go south on Tuesday to face the number-one team from the Southwest District in the first round of state.

Earlier in the week the 1A Nisqually League coaches announced the All-League team. Pirates named to the first team were Thomas Timm-Skove, Michael Butz and O’Neil. Second team picks were Lundblad, Jessie Turner and Weston. McGinnis and Salonen received honorable mention.

Vashon and Chimacum shared the team sportsmanship award.
