Vashon hosted the Seattle Christian High School Warriors in Nisqually league play on Tuesday, Jan. 18 in a game that was characterized by outstanding defensive play by both teams.
The two teams battled to the half with the Warriors holding a slight advantage, 18-14, over the Pirates.
A 12-1 run in the third quarter gave Seattle Christian a cushion going into the final quarter, which opened with the Pirates trailing by 12 points.
The Pirates made a furious run early in the fourth quarter, pulling to within five points of the Warriors with over four minutes to play.
Unfortunately for the home team, Vashon turned the ball over on four straight possessions giving the Warriors a respite and time to adjust defensively. While the Pirates gamely pushed to even the score, the Warriors held on for a 39-26 win.
For the game, Vashon’s offense was spurred by Anya Quig (12 points), Charlotte Kehoe (5 points), Rachel Hoffman (3 points) and three other players — Jasmine Acosta, Taegan Lynch and Cat Amick — with 2 points each.
Vashon played the Cedar Park Christian High School Eagles two days later on Jan. 20 in a non-league game.
The Eagles up-tempo offense was the story of the game as the Cedar Park dominated every quarter. finally beating the Pirates 28-27.
Every Pirate varsity player saw significant time in this game, which was played at a furious pace.
Pirate scoring was led by Kehoe (11), Quig (6) and Hoffman (3). Katherine Misel added a 3 pointer, with Amick and Kylie Johnson scoring two points apiece.
