The second meeting of two Nisqually League rivals resulted in a disappointing loss for the Vashon football team last Friday.
The final score against Charles Write Academy, a lopsided 58-22, highlighted poor Pirate play on both sides of the ball.
Too many fumbles, missed tackles, bad blocking and poorly timed penalties all contributed to the drubbing.
One bright spot was the running of senior Nate Lawson, who managed to cobble together an impressive game of more than 100 rushing yards, and had success moving the ball straight up the middle against the Tarriers. The Charles Wright defense was clearly prepared for sophomore running back Bryce Hoisington, who was met with a wall of white with every carry. Sophomore Kellan Riley had a good offensive effort with a couple receptions, including his first touchdown as a Pirate.
Junior Arthur Moore was off to a good start before being sidelined with a hip injury early in the first quarter.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 16-0, Charles Wright. The Pirates got things rolling with their first possession of the second quarter after Hoisington recovered a Tarrier fumble. The Pirates forced a couple of hard-count offsides penalties, bringing them within striking range of the goal line. Quarterback Chester Pruett punched through for the score, and Hoisington took the ball in for the 2-point conversion. The score was a hopeful 16-8 with 10 minutes to go in the half.
The Tarriers scored three unanswered touchdowns before the Pirates got back on the board. With 17 seconds to go in the half, facing a fourth and 1 on the 11-yard line, Pruett found Riley for a pass completion and touchdown. With the 2-point conversion by Hoisington, the Pirates headed to the locker room at halftime with the score 38-16.
The opening kickoff for the second half saw Charles Wright return the ball for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was stopped, score 44-16.Vashon’s next possession saw a couple of great first down conversions with big gains by Lawson and Riley, but all wasted with a pig-pile fumble and turnover to the Tarriers. That fumble resulted in another Tarrier touchdown and a score of 50-16 with eight minutes to go in the third quarter. The last Charles Wright score of the night came with a minute to go in the third quarter, when they were finally able to punch in past the Vashon defense, which had held them strong on three attempts within the 5-yard line.
With the score a daunting 58-16 to start the fourth quarter, the Pirates fired back with their final score of the evening, a huge run up the middle by Lawson. Hoisington again scored the 2-point conversion, and the score hit the 58-22 final.
The Pirates play Bellevue Christian on Saturday at Lake Washington High School in Bellevue.
