The Vashon Pirates baseball team faced a strenuous test last week, playing four critical league games in just five days. The team won three of the four, all in exciting nail-biting action, bringing their season record to 12 wins and just three losses.
On Monday, April 27, Vashon hosted the Seattle Christian Warriors. Logan Hawkins got the start, going six innings giving up three runs on seven hits, walking four and striking out five. The fast-paced game was tied at 1-1 going into the sixth inning, as neither team could figure out the opposing pitcher. In the top of the inning, the Warriors scored two. The Pirates answered right back, batting around the order and racking up six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control of the game. Josh Myer pitched the final inning, decisively shutting the Warriors down. Pirates won, 7-3.
Wednesday, April 29, was senior day at the field, as teammates, coaches and family honored Vashon’s lone senior, Josh Hruska Myer. He got the start and took on Cascade Christian for the first time this season. It was another tight game with the Pirates taking the 3-2 victory in eight innings. Myer pitched all eight, striking out five and walking none. The score was an excruciating 0-0 going into the sixth inning. Vashon scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth off the hitting of Myer, Hawkins and Chester Pruett. In the top of the seventh, Cascade scored twice, and the Pirates could not manufacture a run in the bottom of the inning, so it was on to extra innings. Myer quickly and efficiently sent Cascade down in the eighth. Back-to -back singles by Harper Whitney and Chester Pruett gave the Pirates base runners with nobody out. Jeremy Pilgrim Stoppel laid down a bunt to the pitcher, and Whitney scored the winning run on a subsequent error by the Warrior third baseman. Pirates won, 3-2.
On Thursday, April 30, the team traveled to Seattle Christian, coming up short on a 3-0 loss. The bats were left on the bus that day, as there were 10 strikeouts up and down the lineup. With only six hits on the day, Vashon still managed to get base runners in scoring position but could not bring them home. Defensive play and base running was sloppy, and two of the Warriors three runs came across on
