The Pirates baseball team opened the 2011 season last Thursday with a home loss to Eatonville High School, 9-5, in non-league action.
Tyler Bernheisel started on the mound for Vashon and pitched three innings, allowing just two runs. Ben Reoux came on in the fourth and pitched two innings, and Julian Smith threw the final two frames.
Coach Steve Hall felt all three pitchers did a good job, except for a couple of pitches that were left up in the zone to the two top Eatonville hitters.
Leading the Pirates at the plate was Peter Johnson, who had three hits with a double and three RBIs. Julian Smith had a couple hits and an RBI. Center fielder Zack Drape did a great job at lead off, drawing two walks and scoring two runs, and he had a single and stolen base to round it off.
The young Pirate defense only committed two errors and did a solid job on the field. The game was an evenly matched affair through five innings (tied 5-5), but Vashon could not match the late scoring of Eatonville.
The line score: Vashon 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 errors, and Eatonville 9 runs, 11 hits, 1 error.
Hall said that everyone on the team got plenty of playing time, and overall they had a decent performance.
“We will learn from this game and head into a tough league game against all-of-a-sudden powerhouse Charles Wright,” he said.
The Pirates will play Charles Wright Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, on Vashon’s home field.
