On Tuesday, March 27, the Pirates baseball team lost 4-1 to the visiting Orting Cardinals in a game shortened to just five innings due to rainy weather.

Orting jumped on Pirate pitcher Josh Myer in the first with a quick four spot. But unfazed by it all, Myer was on the money the rest of the way, only giving up one additional hit through the final four innings.

Myer finished with six strikeouts and only allowed one walk. He had good control, throwing strikes on 47 of his 80 pitches.

On offense, the Pirates ran into Orting’s big, strong senior Joel Moore, who held Vashon to only two hits, both coming off the bat of center fielder Zack Drape.

Drape’s opening at bat was a bullet down the third base line for a double, and he later added a single.

Moore recorded 10 strikeouts for Orting and allowed only one walk. The loss drops Vashon to 0-2 in the Nisqually League and 0-3 overall.

Final line score: Orting 4 runs, 5 hits, 2 errors, Vashon 1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors.

Despite the loss, coach Steve Hall said the boys fought hard on Tuesday and played their best defensive game of the year, not committing an error.

“They are improving and I wish I could say the same about the weather,” he said.

The Pirates are scheduled to play an away game against Charles Wright today, and play away against Pt. Townsend on Friday.
