The Pirate baseball team returned to league play last week to take down Cedar Park Christian but then fell to a closely matched Seattle Christian team in its next game.

On Monday, April 15, the Pirates played a home game against the Cedar Park Christian Eagles. The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Vashon responded with two of their own in the second.

The Pirates added single runs in the next three frames, while the Eagles scored a run in the top of the fourth. After five innings, Vashon was ahead. However, the Eagles were able to push two runs across in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. Neither team scored in the seventh, so the game went into extra innings.

The Eagles failed to score in the eighth. Zach Drape doubled to center to lead off the bottom of the inning. Drape stole third, and Ezra Lacina’s dramatic walk-off single scored the winning run. Kelly Sullivan started on the hill for the Pirates. He went more than five innings and allowed four earned runs.

Sullivan scattered nine hits, surrendered one walk and struck out four batters. Josh Myer relieved in the sixth and recorded the final seven outs while allowing no runs and only three hits. The Vashon offense was led by Drape, who was 3 for 5 and scored the winning run.

Line score: Vashon 6 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors. Cedar Park Christian, 5 runs, 12 hits, 3 errors.

The Pirates took to the road last Wednesday, traveling to Seattle Christian to take on the Warriors. The home team opened the scoring with one run in the first, and Vashon countered with a run in the second.

The Warriors regained the lead with a run in the fourth. The score remained 2-1, Seattle Christian ahead, until the seventh, when Drape singled to center scoring Sam Schoenberg, who had singled to open the inning.

The score was now knotted at 2-2. However, the Pirates were unable to score the go-ahead run, and the Warriors were held scoreless in the bottom of the inning. So for the second game in a row, Vashon played extra innings.

After threatening in the top of the eighth, the Pirates came up empty. Seattle Christian fared better and was able to nudge across the winning run for a 3-2 victory.

Josh Myer pitched a complete game. He allowed eight hits (all singles) and gave up only two earned runs. He struck out seven batters and surrendered two walks.

Offensively, the Pirates were led by Drape, Myer, Ben Reoux and Clyde Pruett, all of whom went 2 for 4 on the afternoon. Ezra Lacina, Kelly Sullivan, Ryan Bernheisel and Schoenberg all had singles. In fact, the two teams combined for 20 hits in the game, and they were all singles.
