The Vashon Valkyries high school girls lacrosse team dominated in an away game against Curtis on Thursday, March 26.

Vashon emerged strong, setting a trend that lasted throughout the game. All positions played their roles to textbook perfection with frequent passing between the lines to bring the ball into offensive position.

Midfielder Sadie Hoverter won six draw controls, providing Vashon immediate advantage following the draw. Ellen Chappelka, also a midfielder, showed her strength in getting control of loose balls and soundly forwarding them to the attack offense.

Attack freshman Genevieve Rauma led the scoring with five goals and one assist, followed by Anneke Steneke with three goals and three assists and Mykah Shiosaki with three goals and a strong showing on both offense and defense. The Valkyries won the game, 12-8.

On Friday the Valkyries faced Issaquah, a program ranked 20th in the nation, in another away game. The Issaquah Eagles showed their depth off the first draw, scoring within the first minute.

The Valkyries struggled to find their footing as Issaquah continued to put points on the board. Seconds before the half, Rauma scored on a penalty shot, placing the score at 11-1.

The Vakyries settled down and looked more like themselves, breaking into the second half with three consecutive goals, two from Shiosaki and one picture-perfect shot from Chappelka.

The Eagles answered back with five more goals with many more prevented by a Valkyries defense that nearly shut them out of the shooting zone. Rauma scored one more goal seconds before the clock ran out, and the game went to Issaquah, with a final score of 16-5.

Of note, goalie Anna Berti had 19 saves, and Vashon scored more goals on the Eagles than any other opponent this season.

At the end of the game players asked that Paige Bulson be named as player of the game for her effort.
