Under cloudy skies, Vashon took 29 McMurray Middle School athletes to Bainbridge Island for the league finals in track and field.
The races were exciting, and many athletes set personal records in field events.
The sixth graders competed valiantly against older and taller athletes. They are Paddy Affolter, Philip Vandevanter, Ryan Krug, Ryan Linea, Maddie Groen and Hart Heffelfinger.
The seventh graders also put forth a strong showing: Jack Summers (third in 75-meter hurdles), Olin Nespor and Nick Betz. Coaches bid adieu to the team’s large contingent of eighth graders, whom they believed will have a great future in track and field. They are Lucian Pizzano (sixth in the mile — 5:37), Mariya Munsey (first in turbo javelin — 88 feet), Cat Amick, Izak Anderson, Gianna Andrews, Dylan Basurto, Noah Baseleon-Abbott, Ryan Bingham, Sage Everett, Christina Glebb, Taylor Hernandez, Max Johnson, Logan Lewis, Austen McDiarmid, Keegan Oswald, Kenese Parker, Mary Kate Gildea, Corrine Pruett, Lyndsay Straube, Erica Walker and Orion Zick.
One of the final races of the day was the boys 4×200 meter, a team that ran their best time of 1:54 to win first place. It was an amazing race.
A great group from the Harbor School was unable to compete at the last meet due to travel study and exams: Maddie Bergman, Emma Levant, Kate Jewson, Sarah Warner, Alex Soriano, Max Hudson, Peter Evans, Amayah Royer, Lili Stenn, Rachel Emery and Rowan Stewart.
