Everyone at Vashon Lacrosse continues to develop their skills as the season progresses.
The Valkyries girls’ high school team has won three games and lost one. Their dedication at practice shows through on the field in their games. Because we do not have teams competing in the girls’ youth league this year, they are not eligible for varsity and must play as a junior varsity team. This means they will not be advancing to the state championships this year.
At Vashon Lacrosse, we are working on growing our girls’ programs to thrive in their league and beyond. Come cheer the team on at their next home game, against Bellarmine Prep at 6 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Vashon High School. They come back the next day, Saturday, April 29, to play against Ballard, at 1 p.m.
Girls who are interested in learning to play lacrosse in a fun, low-pressure environment should check out the drop-in practice on Mondays, at McMurray Middle School, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. No equipment, experience, or money is needed. The girls’ game has different rules, different gear, and less contact than the boys’ game. This program is sponsored by Vashon Park District.
The high school boys’ team, the Vultures, lost quite a few great players when they graduated last year, and had even fewer players join the team this season. Despite this, they have come together and proven to be formidable competitors.
This team’s dedication on and off the field shows up when they play. Davis Rice and Ben Larson never cease to amaze. And Caden Oberlander, Staten Douthit, and Finn Lawler have upped their game immensely this year.
The Vultures’ next home game will be the most important game of the season, determining where the team will end up in the playoffs for the state championship. Come catch this important game between the two best teams in the league. Vashon and Enumclaw will face off at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 3, at the high school.
The athletes on the boys’ youth teams are picking up more and more skills as the season goes on. The Falcons’ third- and fourth-grade teams have their next home game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Harbor School. The fifth- and sixth-grade teams will play shortly after at 1 p.m. on that day. The seventh- and eighth-grade teams won’t have a home game until Saturday, May 6 when they play Gig Harbor at 1 p.m. at the high school.
It has been a pleasure watching all these teams develop this season, and we look forward to seeing how much farther they can go before this season is over.
