Lacrosse goes up against Lake Tapps, Selah

Vashon Lacrosse sustained another frustrating loss at the hands of Lake Tapps on Wednesday, April 20.

Vashon Lacrosse sustained another frustrating loss at the hands of Lake Tapps on Wednesday, April 20.

Vashon came out disorganized in the first quarter, resulting in Lake Tapps jumping to a 4-1 lead. Goalie Aaron Bomber made several terrific saves in the first quarter and throughout the game to keep Vashon close.

While Vashon had numerous scoring opportunities in first three quarters, it converted only three goals. Meanwhile, Lake Tapps did not falter and held a 7-3 lead after three quarters.

Lake Tapps scored two more goals before Vashon’s offense came to life mid-way through the fourth. In the span of one and a half minutes, John Smith and Griff Jennings each scored unassisted goals. Two minutes later, Dan Lofland and Caz Mozeleski netted two more goals. But it was too little too late though for Vashon. Lake Tapps held on for a 12-7 victory.

Vashon used its non-league game against Selah on Saturday as an opportunity to give all of its players some time on the field. In fact, all 14 freshmen on the team saw significant playing time.

While Selah did not have many experienced players either, it made up for its inexperience with speed and physical play.

The score was tied 3-3 at the end of the first period. Selah pulled ahead in the second, bringing the score to 8-4 and then cruised to a 15-9 win.

Vashon’s bright spots included six different freshmen contributing either goals or assists. Smith led scorers with three goals and one assist. Ian McWhirter and Hart Heffelfinger played solid defense.

Vashon played Lake Washington on Tuesday and will play Puyallup today at 7 p.m. at home.
