Islander Mikie Hoffmann traveled to San Antonio Oct. 28 to compete in the 21st Annual Sporting Clays National Championship at the 630-acre National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Tex.

There were a record number of shooters that competed in the main event from almost every state and several foreign countries. The world’s top sporting clay shooters were there for this four-day, 300-target main event.

On each day of the main event, shooters faced 74 to 76 targets. By the end of the tournament, each person had shot four different 10 station fields, with each shooter taking on a different course each of the four days.

Hoffmann participated in the four-day main event for 12-gauge shotguns and placed in the top third out of about 1,300 people overall and tied for 24th in the B division.

He also shot in three sub-gauge categories in the B division, where he finished tied for 13th in the 410 class, tied for 33rd in the 28 gauge and in 12th place in the 20 gauge.

He was also in the Krieghoff Cup, another 12-gauge event, where he tied for 18th in B division.
