Every football player’s dream came true for the Vashon Pirate Youth Football heavyweight team when it was invited to play a game on the Husky Stadium field against the University Place Vikings on Saturday. The Heavies won 7-0.
Ezra Ende tackled Vikings in the backfield and then ran 89 yards to score the winning touchdown with 16 seconds left. Lining up at tight end, Ende blew through the early pursuit and then accelerated for the last 30 yards.
The game started as a defensive struggle between two evenly matched opponents. Each team gained midfield yardage, but found it tough to crack the red zone. Jessie Norton had several long runs that demonstrated good field vision and quick reactions. Edgar Polkat and Chase Wickman each made pivotal interceptions that snuffed Viking drives.
The VPYF lightweight team, Bud’s Bombers, played a game of its own on Saturday against the Eatonville Cruisers, losing 19-7.
