The Vashon girls’ tennis team finished up a busy week prior to spring break. For the week of April 4, the team started out with a much-needed practice day on Monday. On Tuesday, it hosted Northwest Christian for a home match.
Northwest Christian brought a young team, as they are just restarting their tennis program. As a result, Coach Brougham filled many of the varsity spots with JV players. The Pirates won 5-0, and many players who normally don’t play the Varsity matches gained valuable experience and came up with great wins.
A good example was Peytra Gard playing number one singles, who pulled out a long, tight third set tiebreaker for the final win. On Wednesday, the team travelled to Puyallup for an away match. Puyallup is a 4A school, but the teams seemed evenly matched. Vashon eventually earned a 3-2 victory with wins by Taryn Mulvihill at number one singles and Lizzie Maciejewski at number two singles, and Emmaline Wittwer teamed with Hannah Nelson to win at number one doubles. The wins at the top of the lineup were encouraging for the Pirates. On Thursday, the Pirates played an unusual third consecutive match, traveling to Emerald Ridge. The team was not at full strength and lost to Emerald Ridge 1-4, the lone win of the day came from Taryn Mulvihill at number one singles. A nice effort was put in by Tabitha Gray playing her first singles match, who lost a hard-fought match at number two singles.
On Friday, to close out the week out, the team traveled to the University of Washington to watch the team’s match with Stanford. The event is traditionally a fun and inspiring outing for the team, with members also squeezing in a short tour of the UW for those interested in college. The trip finished a busy week without much practice time as the team headed into spring break with an overall record of 5-3.
After the break, the Pirates travelled to undefeated Charles Wright on Tuesday, after press time. They will travel again on Wednesday to South Kitsap and then host Cascade Christian on Thursday for another busy week.
