The Vashon High School girls basketball Pirates won two Nisqually league games last week and lost one non-league game.

They defeated the Eagles of Life Christian, 54-35, and the Cardinals of Orting, 57-29, and lost to the Eatonville Cruisers, 56-43. The Eagles, a young and improved team from last year, came out pressing and attacking last Tuesday and jumped up to an 8-2 lead on the Pirates.

Once the Pirates settled down, they went on an 11-1 run to take a 13-9 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, Chrissy Swope and Zelda Porter each scored 6 to lead the Pirates who outscored the Eagles 18 to 5.

The Eagles stayed scrappy in the third and at one point got within 12 of the Pirates. The Pirates pumped it up in the fourth and put the Eagles away.

The Pirates were lead by Kelly Costello with 15, Porter 13, Swope 10, Liz Hill 8, Anneli Dolmseth 6 and Abby Dolmseth with 2.

On Friday night the Pirates traveled to the Puyallup Valley to face the Orting Cardinals.

The Pirates pressed the Cardinals in the first quarter, jumping out to a 14-0 lead, and by the end of the first quarter, the Pirates led 22-3. The Cardinals fought hard and won the second quarter 12-9 and found themselves down 31-15 at half time. In the third quarter the Pirates were back up on top passing and hitting their shots, outscoring Orting 12-2.

At the start of the fourth, the Pirates had a brief lapse in intensity and team effort, but after a time-out they put on a run of four beautiful plays where everyone touched the ball before they scored, finishing off the Cardinals.

The Pirates were led by Costello with 13, Swope 11, Porter with 10, Hill 6, Kiki Means 6, Abby Dolmseth 6, Anneli Dolmseth 4 and Karisa Gibbons with 2.

A little banged up and a little fatigued from the night before, the Pirates got off to a rocky start on Friday, down 20-10 against the Cruisers. For the next three quarters the Pirates played Eatonville virtually to a standstill.

Finding themselves several times in the fourth quarter down by 9 with the ball, the Pirates could not convert.

Although the Eatonville game was a tough loss for the Pirates, as a non- league game it was a good test for the young improving team.

The Pirates were led by Costello with 19, Means with 6, Hill with 5, Porter with 5, Swope 4 and Anneli and Abby Dolmseth with 2 each.

The Pirates scheduled two home games last night against Charles Wright and Friday against Steilacoom.
