Vashon’s girls varsity soccer team, which has a history of success, won its first two games of the season last week. The girls beat Charles Wright, 4-1, at a home game on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Two days later they took down Cascade Christian in a shutout away game, 1-0.

Sophomore midfielder Lliralyn McEachern scored the winning goal against Cascade Christian, and also scored against Charles Wright.

Coach Paul Beytebiere said he was especially pleased to see Vashon beat Charles Wright, the only Nisqually team that Vashon lost to last season.

What’s more, he said, Vashon hasn’t beat Charles Wright on the home field for several years.

“It was a really nice win, and they played really well,” he said.

Last year the Pirates finished second to Charles Wright in the Nisqually League and took fourth place at the 1A state tournament.

Beytebiere said this year’s team — with nearly 50 girls in the varsity and JV programs — also looks promising.

“The midfield and offense and leadership has been real good so far this year,” he said. “The back four, defensive unit is coming together and taking a lot of pride in their defense.”

The Pirates played Chimacum on Monday after press deadline. They will take on Life Christian in a home game tonight at 6 p.m., and will travel to the Stadium Bowl tomorrow to play Woodrow Wilson High School in a non-league game at 7:15 p.m.
