The Vashon High School girls soccer team, coming off a string of wins, proved their true ability on Monday, Sept. 27, when they were matched against Orting High School Cardinals.

Going into the contest, Orting was tied with Vashon for first in the Nisqually league. The Pirates stepped away Monday night with a score of 4-1 and full ownership of that league title. However, they lost that position a week later when they played Cascade Christian and lost 4-0.

Goals were scored in the game against Orting by Olivia Andrus, Cat Amick and team captain Lena DeGuzman. Often defensive accomplishments are overlooked, but on this occasion recognition is in order for the Pirates defensive line, led by DeGuzman and Alex Wall. Other than one lucky goal scored off of a corner kick, the Pirate defense succeeded in shutting Orting’s forwards throughout the game.

The few times the Cardinals got past Vashon defense, goalkeeper Courtney Gateman succeeded in making vital saves under pressure.

A week later, on Monday, Oct. 4, the team suffered its first loss of the season against the Seattle Christian Warriors, 4-0.

On Thursday, Oct. 7, the girls will take on Charles Wright Academy at 3:30 p.m. in Tacoma.
