The Vashon girls basketball team evened their Nisqually League record to 1-1 with a win over visiting Life Christian on Friday.

The visiting Eagles jumped out to an early lead, but the Pirates battled back to take a 24-20 advantage to the break. Vashon then pulled away in the fourth quarter on their way to a 44-32 win.

The Pirate offense was sparked by senior Charlotte Kehoe, who tallied 15 points and a stellar 19 rebounds during the game. Anya Quig added 10 point for the Pirates, while Rachel Hoffman (8), Tagen Lynch (5), Jasmine Acosta (2), Kelsey Abella (2) and Marya Munsey (2) rounded out the Vashon scoring.

Vashon also won two non-league games last week.  On Monday, Dec. 12, Vashon played Auburn Adventist. The Falcons kept the game close through three quarters before the Pirates opened a late, eight-point lead on their way to a 40-35 victory.

Kehoe again paced the Pirate scorers with 14 points, with Hoffman (9), Lynch (7), Acosta (5) and Quig (5) getting the rest of the scoring.

After the game, coach Henry Porter noted that Munsey’s solid work in the press break was one of the keys to Vashon’s success that night.

On short rest after the game against Life Christian, the Vashon girls traveled on Saturday to The Northwest School for a mid-day game. The Pirates battled their way to a 33-27 win, improving their overall record to 4-2.

Kehoe again came through for Vashon with 14 points. Quig (9), Hoffman (7) and Acosta (3) paced the remaining scoring.

“We have been playing great defensively,” Porter said afterward. “But we need to work toward getting into our offensive sets with better timing and energy.”

The Pirates next game will be on Thursday at Fife.
