Soccer’s popularity seems to be on a roll on Vashon, with playing opportunities offered not only by the school district, but through the Vashon Island Soccer Club (VISC) as well.

This summer brought yet another opportunity for Islanders to get some field time, as VISC offered its first season of an adult soccer league.

This introductory program hosted up to 40 players on five teams, playing six to eight sided games twice a week. The adult league is a park district program supported by VISC, with equipment sponsored by La Playa Mexican Restaurant.

The program provided casual co-ed play for ages 18 though 80, and there was an excellent turnout of talent and jovial spirit. More experienced players served as field coaches and referees.

Frequently on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings one could find two games in play at once on The Harbor School fields, with many children cheering from the sidelines. The rules were simpler than official matches to increase play for the 60-minute half-field games.

The adult league was formed as an off-shoot of the men’s drop-in soccer group, which plays a faster, more advanced level of game two night a week, year round.
