Charles Wright Academy (CWA) came to Vashon on Tuesday, Oct. 11, and was handed a 4-1 loss in a league meet with the Vashon Pirates.
Nick Zuckerman, Vashon High School’s (VHS) #1 singles player, was pitted again CWA’s #1, Parth Jain — a gifted and patient player, and one of four players who earned his way to the Nisqually League’s state tournament last season.
The scoreline does not project the true tone of the match, as it was a long and exhaustive affair.
The VHS #1 doubles team, Hatcher Freda and Danny Baldinger, also had their hands full, in a protracted two-set victory over CWA players Sam Brink and Conner Iverson.
VHS vs. CWA scoring
Singles #1: Nick Zuckerman suffered a 1-6, 1-6 loss. Singles #2: Moses Trundle-Strachan took a 6-3, 6-1 win. Doubles #1: Hatcher Freda and Danny Baldinger took a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win. Doubles #2: Finn Hawkins and Charlie Walker took a 6-2, 6-1 win. Doubles #3: Alwyn Stamat and Jonas Wahanik took a 6-3, 6-4 win.
East Jefferson (EJ), up next on VHS’s schedule last week, is a league team made up of students from Port Townsend and Chimacum High schools.
This meet had two competitive matches, played by singles players.
Moses Trundle-Strachan, the VHS team captain, put in a workman-like performance against Stuart Dow. This proved a bit tricky, due to the playing style of Dow, who is what is known in tennis terms as a “pusher” — someone who gets to almost everything and puts the ball back with no pace.
Nick Zuckerman suffered a loss after a very well-played and long match against EJ player Reid Martin. This went to the third set tiebreaker and was eventually won by Reid.
Our doubles teams made quick work of their less-skilled opponents and deserve credit for the bulk of our victories this season. The more recent pairing of Finn and Charlie has proven to be especially formidable.
