The Vashon boys’ basketball Pirates logged two more Nisqually League wins last week, beating perennial rivals Cascade Christian and Charles Wright Academy.
On Jan. 20, the Pirates played at home against the Cascade Christian Cougars, with competitive tensions running high. The Pirates used their home-court energy to jump all over the visiting Cougars, ending the first half up by a score of 30-13.
Knowing the nature of this rivalry, it was clear that things would tighten up in the second half. And while the Cougars implemented a very physical style of play, the Pirates withstood the charge and came out on top by a score of 46-32.
Scoring summary: Jessie Norton 18, Sam Yates 13, Sam Schoenberg 5, Alex Symbol-Godfrey 3, Steen Jennings 3, Casper Forest 2 and Ian Stewart 2.
On Jan. 23, the Pirates played on the road against the Charles Wright Tarriers — the only other unbeaten team in the league. The Pirates made a strong statement against a team energized by its home crowd, keeping the score close at first, then blowing the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Tarriers 22-5. The second half brought a high level of intensity from the Tarriers, who were determined to save face on their home turf, but the Pirates — bolstered by a giant Green Tide fan showing — held on for the win, with a final score of 55-40.
Scoring summary: Norton 20, Yates 12, Schoenberg 9, Jennings 6, Symbol-Godfrey 3, Sean Delargey 3 and Ian Stewart 2.
The Pirates played Seattle Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 27, after press deadline and will play at home against Bellevue Christian on Friday.
