Local support helped the paper thrive in 2015 | Editorial

Putting out a newspaper on Vashon is a job that’s interesting, challenging and always rewarding. Here at The Beachcomber we count ourselves lucky to get to know our community so intimately and bring you the news and information you’ve come to count on each week. But we can’t take all the credit because we couldn’t do it alone. As 2014 comes to a close, we want to thank everyone who supported The Beachcomber this past year.

The Beachcomber gets contributions from a number of community writers and photographers, both regular and occasional, who ask for no more than their name by their work. These volunteers are most notable in the opinion section, where guests regularly contribute commentaries. Kevin Joyce, Will North, Kevin Pottinger, Greg Wessel and Chris Austin, some of our most regular contributors, thank you for keeping us laughing and pondering life on this eclectic island.

The sports section is also driven by volunteers — parents, coaches, players and others who attend high school sports games and generously cover them for the paper. Ben Bork, Pat Call, Bruce Cyra, Joel Hille, Robin Hruska, Ezra Lacina, Gary Means, James Norton, Cheryl Pruett, Kevin Ross and Hans Van Dusen have all helped us regularly cover our athletes this year. Local photographer John Sage has also contributed many of his sports photos to the paper.

This past year regular features on island life have been graciously contributed by a couple of local writers. Bruce Haulman continues to bring history to life with his Time & Again columns, and Jenn Reidel has helped us get to know our neighbors better with her Welcome Vashon interviews, one of which is in this week’s issue.

We also want to recognize the talented photographers who occasionally share their work with us. Terry Donnelly, Jeff Dunnicliff, Martin Halliwell, Kelly Keenan, Ralph Moore, Ray Pfortner and Robert Teagardin have all contributed photos that have added greatly to the paper.

We’re also deeply grateful to our advertisers, many of whom support this paper week after week. Our newspaper couldn’t exist without you.

Finally, we’re ever grateful to our readers. Your loyal readership helps our newspaper thrive, and you often help shape the paper with news tips, letters to the editor, snapshots of island happenings and inquiries about topics we might cover. Thank you for your support.
