Destination Vashon’s promotion of tourism is great, but the dog-friendly page 65 is an invitation to take a dump on Vashon.
Tourists should visit and leave nothing but money. Values like wildlife habitat, public health and other pursuits are sacrificed when the island goes to the dogs.
Someone lost to the dog-friendly craze might feel that limits including leashes shouldn’t be put on them, but voice command is too little too late when it comes to most things dogs do.
The human part of the equation needs to be held accountable. I suggest by a sharp “no.”
KVI is not a dog park. It is irresponsible to promote it as such. It is an environmentally sensitive area, with important wildlife and aquatic resources. If it were actually clean, it would be a great place for kids and beach outings too. But, it has no facilities, no parking, no driftwood fires and should have no dogs off leash. The publisher of Destination Vashon should not be a party to KVI’s absentee owner and King County’s blind eye to the problem or make it worse by spreading inaccurate information.
