On Sunday, the best and brightest in film will be recognized at the 81st annual Academy Awards in Hollywood — and thanks to Vashon Film Society, the event will take center stage on Vashon as well.

It’s Oscar Night — a chance to get gussied up, strut the red carpet

and watch the awards with friends and neighbors at Vashon Theatre.

It’s the best way to see the show because for the past decade, Oscar Night has helped fill the coffers of Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation, which doles out scholarships to each Vashon High School senior who applies. Proceeds from Sunday’s snazzy celebration go to seniors hoping to make a splash in the arts someday.

So everyone who’s anyone should at least make a cameo at Sunday’s star-studded event and help the scholarship fund grow.

While you’re there, say a word of thanks to the Oscar Night organizers, who put on the event on a shoestring budget. The businesses who offer up prizes to best-dressed attendees also deserve a tip of the hat. And Vashon Theatre owner Eileen Wolcott deserves a golden statue of her own. She has one of the least glamorous jobs in the industry. What she does is hard work: She has heavy reels of film to lift, marquee letters to change in the rain and sticky floors to mop.

And though it’s sometimes tough to make ends meet, she remains committed to ensuring that Islanders have a place to see films — and the Academy Awards — the way they were meant to be seen: larger than life on the silver screen.
