As we approach the 25th anniversary of Voice of Vashon (VoV), it’s a perfect time to reflect on the “little station that could” and the impact this community-driven organization has had on our island.

VoV is more than just a radio and TV station; it’s the heartbeat of Vashon Island, connecting our diverse community through shared stories, local news, and vibrant cultural programming.

Voice of Vashon has grown into a robust, community-run organization with an active board and dozens of volunteers. This growth is a testament to the dedication and passion of our community members just like you.

One of the most critical roles VoV plays is in public safety. Our 24/7/365 Emergency Alert Service provides vital information during storms, power outages, and other emergencies. This service ensures that residents are informed and prepared. Our small and mighty team is always looking for a few more dedicated members to support this service. VoV is also a cultural hub, offering a platform for local artists, musicians, and storytellers. Talk shows ranging from “A Vashon Minute” and “Inspired Island” to “Embracing the Muse” showcase the rich tapestry of talent on our island. Shows like “The Brown Briefly” and “Adventures in Recovery” get to the heart of what matters to our island community. The plethora of music inspired shows has something for everyone, hand curated by islanders, for islanders.

Additionally, VoV records and broadcasts community events, like the annual VHS graduation parade, youth sports broadcasts, the Thriftway Shopping Spree (this year won by Gravy chef Dre Neeley and benefitting not just VoV but also the Vashon Food Bank — bonus!) and of course, the Strawberry Festival grand parade.

This is all generously supported by grants, community donations and business underwriters. It really does take an island to keep VoV strong.

Inclusivity is at the heart of VoV’s mission. The station provides a platform for diverse voices, ensuring that everyone in our community has the opportunity to be heard.

This year, KVSH 101.9 FM, our low powered radio station, celebrates its 10th year as well. Whether through the FM and AM stations, our TV station, our free app or on the web, VoV gives a voice to the unique experiences and viewpoints of Vashon Islanders.

To celebrate our 25th anniversary, we are hosting a special fundraiser event, “The VOICE,” a live singing competition which promises to be an unforgettable evening.

The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. on October 15 at the Vashon Theatre, a GreenTech supported event. Doors open at 7 p.m. We are thrilled to have Isaac Slade, former frontman of The Fray and owner of Side Stack Records, as our opening act. Not only is Slade a performer, but Side Stack is also a sponsor of this event along with Pandora’s Box, Island Insurance, O Sole Mio, Dragon’s Head Cidery and our anchor sponsor for three years running, The Pharmacy. We are so thankful for their support and yours.

Our lineup of amazing contestants, including some talented youth voices, will be judged by our celebrity panel, which will also select the “Golden Lips” winner. Arlette Moody will serve as the emcee.

This event is not just a birthday bash celebration but also a fundraiser to ensure our continued success. Limited VIP packages, which include table seating and snack boxes from Dragon’s Head Cidery, are available for purchase at voiceofvashon.org. Adult and regular beverages and concessions are available for purchase from the theatre.

There is a suggested donation at the door of $10 for general entry — and don’t forget cash or credit cards to vote for your favorite contestant (one dollar is one vote) during the People’s Choice component of the show.
