A couple of parents asked me if I would consider running for unofficial mayor to raise money for the Vashon Island School District’s co-curricular program. Our school district is facing a severe revenue shortfall for next year and reductions in all or elimination of some co-curricular activities is being discussed. Co-curricular programs include athletics, debate, band, Math Olympiad, Honor Society, Japanese club, field science club, guide dog club, leadership/student council, journalism, technology club and much, much more.
The importance of these programs should not be underestimated. More than two out of three students select these programs. There are many different ways that our children learn the skills that they need to be successful in life. Many of our students find that the place that they truly learn the lesson of teamwork, discipline, communication, conflict resolution, physical fitness, sportsmanship, honor, commitment, focus, mentorship, self worth, right mind or compassion is in the co-curricular activity that sparks their inner fire.
From a larger perspective, this community is limited in the enhancement options we can provide for our children’s education, recreation and entertainment. Our school’s co-curricular programs fill their needs and their daily schedules. Without them, I fear not only for the lost opportunities in their education and development, but I also fear that the lure of doing things that are detrimental to their health and welfare will claim more of our youth.
I said yes. I have always been an advocate and champion for the children of this community as they are our future and our hope for a better world. If you surround the seed with fertile soil and provide it with appropriate water and nutrients, the fruit will be so very sweet. They welcome your help.
