Members of the Vashon Park District board have sounded the right note: It’s time to figure out a plan for completing the fields project north of town. And then to execute it.
Lots of problems have dogged the project, not all of which were the park district’s fault. At the same time, the small agency, as commissioners have pointed out in recent public meetings, got in over its head. But finger-pointing is not what’s needed now. What’s needed is a plan that makes sense — a path that will enable the park district to complete the project and to do so in time to secure more than $150,000 in state grants.
It’s important to remember what’s at stake — not only state funds but also a project that’s inherently positive for Vashon. Once completed, these fields will provide another venue for people, both young and old, to get exercise, have fun and build community.
We commend Commissioner John Hopkins for advocating for this meeting, for working with his colleagues Lu-Ann Branch and Joe Wald to make it happen and for recruiting Craig Beles to provide his skilled facilitation services pro bono. We hope many people — representatives of user groups, parents of young athletes, community activists and more — attend. And we hope for a positive outcome.
