Shirley “Mickey” Cole
On May 26, 2011, our family’s foundation and inspiration died at the age of 83 after a short illness. Mickey was born on July 25, 1927 in Chehalis, WA, the youngest of four children. After graduating from Chehalis H.S. she received her B.A. from Oregon State University, where she was a member of the Pi Phi Sorority. She remained an ardent Beaver fan and supporter throughout her life.
Following graduation, Mickey moved to Seattle where she met and married her lifetime sweetheart, Clarence “Clancy” Cole. The Cole family moved to Magnolia in 1957 where son Michael and daughter Susan were raised. An exceptional wife, mother and community volunteer, in another era Mickey would have also been a great CEO. In 1984 she and Clancy retired to Vashon Island.
Mickey had an unquenchable thirst to learn, reading a couple of books a week throughout her life on an amazingly diverse range of subjects. At different times she threw herself into skiing, boating, Morgan horse show riding, being a docent for eight years with Clancy at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, and her constant passion, gardening. She took up Yoga in the 1950’s before most people could even spell the word. Following spinal fusion two years ago, she was back to the gym and her garden in a very short time amazing everyone. She had a passion to live life to the fullest, and she did so.
Mickey is survived by her husband of 60 years, Clancy, son Michael (Laurie), daughter Susan, grandchildren, Alison, McKenna, Owen, Aidan, and great grandchildren Liam and Henley.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on June 4th at 3 PM at The Church of the Holy Spirit,
15420 Vashon Hwy SW, on Vashon Island. Please visit our online guest book at www.islandfuneral.com.
