Richard (Dick) Rhoads died peacefully at his granddaughter’s home after succumbing to cancer. He is survived by his daughters Ahlyshawndra (Shawn) and husband David, and Erin and husband Craig; sisters Carolyn (Lynne), Nola and half-siblings: Quindara, Jeannette and Terry; grandchildren Kelsey and husband John, Ryan and wife Nicole, Anthony and Meri, and Derrick, as well as his nephews Dale and wife Natalie, Tim and wife Trina, Eddie and wife Norma Jean and Eric, and foster son Ruben.
With the help of Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care, the family was able to bring him home to Kelsey’s house where his friends and family, whom loved him very much, were able to say good-bye to Dad/Grampa/Dick in a quiet and loving setting.
Dick was very happy on Vashon. He originally bought the property while attending the University of Washington and then between marriage, the death of his wife, Gwynn, and traveling to Mexico to live with his daughters, he didn’t come back to his house on Vashon until around 1970. By then the house was in a state of disrepair and, in his own personal style, he fixed it up to be able to live there quite happily.
While living on the island he developed many, many close friendships and was quite content to remain there as long as he lived.
The family wishes to thank all of you who were instrumental in helping them survive the weeks preceding his death with the help of food, visits (in person and in spirit), emotional support, cards, emails, phone calls, texts and just plain being there.
Eventually his ashes will be spread on his beloved property so that he can remain there always.
There is a “Celebration of Life” potluck scheduled for a future date.
